Eurotunnel – The Tunnel That United France And England

Over two hundred years ago, the idea of a road tunnel between France and England was brought forth to Napoleon in 1802, but that plan came with political, geological and technology complications, however that did not hinder the French and English pursuit. Many years had passed since the proposal and the Victorian planners thought they could actually do it, now that they had more tunneling knowledge and locomotives were available. The first serious attempt started in the 1870′s by checking the geology, both countries agreed to work together on a joint tunnel scheme to bring them closer together. By the 1880′s the boring trial began from both sides, however the tunnel was forsaken in 1883 due to fear of a French invasion. In the 1970′s, both nations finally crushed their arguments in order to advance with the tunnel. The second attempt started in 1974-75, but this also got discontinued due to an economic crisis caused by world oil prices. But in the late 80′s and early 90′s they eventually continued with the production, which was a great accomplishment, finally the Eurotunnel was invented, but the project was two years overdue and was way over budget. Great minds globally had to engineer a unique boring machine exclusively created for this purpose, with thousands of staff eagerly ready to build the longest undersea railway tunnel in the world. This extraordinary journey has pushed the limits of technology and human determination to the edge. Many questions were asked before and after the tunnel, one in particular is “Will this tunnel kill the ferries cross-channel business?” The answer is ‘no’, the cross-channel traffic was growing so fast that there would be enough business for both companies. The channel tunnel prices compared to the ferries prices are pretty similar, so they have left the customers with the choice to choose. Eurotunnel provide a few operations and services for the public which are passenger services, car shuttle and freight, these also consist of many benefits for instance European breakdown cover that will cover you for any travel emergency and motor breakdown. The creation of the Eurotunnel is a story of engineering triumph and will echo throughout history as one of the greatest super structures ever built.
