When In Lanzarote – Explore

Lanzarote is a unique island that offers visitors loads to do and see as well as great weather and wonderful beaches. This Spanish owned Canary Island is home to a number of fascinating attractions all of which can be enjoyed on a variety of guided tours and excursions.

Lanzarote was first discovered by the Italian adventurer Lancelloto Malocello and visitors today will find that there is plenty to explore, after all if you have not seen it before it will be new to you too.

Don’t just stick to the usual suspects though as getting to know a few local will open up quite a few hidden treasures that the average tourist will never even find out about. These days many tourists opt to stay in private rental accommodation – such as villas in Lanzarote which are very popular. Visitors planning to spend time exploring the island a little more will find that villas in Costa Teguise are absolutely ideal as most of these lie within a twenty minute drive of the resort, such as the Cactus Garden and the Mirador del Rio.

Like most of the main attractions on Lanzarote these were created by Cesar Manrique, a local artist who was born in Arrecife – the islands capital – in 1919. It´s thanks to Manrique that the island still remains unspoiled as he campaigned against over development on Lanzarote when tourism first arrived in the 1970´s. And it is thanks to him that much of Lanzarote´s volcanic scenery and traditional architecture has been retained intact, giving the island an unspoiled feel.

Lanzarote is home to an abundance of museums – the best known of which is probably the Museum of International and Contemporary Art, which is housed in the historic 18th century castle, the Castillo de San Jose in Arrecife.

The Castillo is an 18th century castle which as originally built to defend the island from attack by pirates. The Castillo houses some of the best paintings around from leading Canarian artists such as Millares, Lasso and of course Manrique, and whilst some visitors will have there cultural appetites more than filled by the art collection here others can enjoy a further feast for the senses in the basement where Manrique also designed a very stylish restaurant that serves traditional Canarian food with a modern day twist.

Many tourists choose to take advantage of the cheap rental rates and petrol on Lanzarote by hiring their own car to explore and get around, alternatively there are numerous companies offering guided tours of the island.  Which take in all of the main attractions such as the many creations of César Manrique and natural wonders such as the islands volcanic region too.
