The busy concrete jungle can be a daunting place when you first arrive, so before you take yourNew York holidays, familiarise yourself with the 5 different boroughs comprising the city.
Manhattan is densely populated and is home to most of the cities skyscrapers and Central Park. The borough is New York’s financial centre and plays host to shopping Heaven (and the world’s “most expensive street!”) in the form of 5th Avenue and the brightly lit, commercial hub of Times Square.
Brooklyn is known for its cultural, ethnic and social diversity and distinctive architecture, such as the hugeWilliamsburgh Savings Bank and that which can be found in Prospect Park. Brooklyn also encompasses a beautiful, far-stretching beachfront including the adjacent Coney Island, which is renowned for its amusements.
Queens is the largest borough of the city and is the most ethnically diverse county within the US. It doesn’t quite have the tourism factor of the other boroughs but more and more people are visiting the area to appreciate the history, culture and food of NY without the large crowds or high prices of Manhattan. Citi Field – the home of theNew York Mets lies within and the city annually hosts theU.S. Open tennis tournament making it an optimum location for sport fans too.
Bronx is the most northerly area and the only one to be a part of US homeland. The Bronx which is the birthplace of rap and hip-hop culture – is also home to the New York Yankees and their stadium, as well as the largest metropolitan zoo (Bronx Zoo) which covers 25 acres and houses over 6,000 animals.
Staten Island is reached by tthe free Staten Island Ferry – one of the city’s most fvoured tourist attractions. The ferry provides unsurpassed views of theStatue of Liberty,Ellis Island, and also lower Manhattan. The island is home to 28 miles of walking trails and a vast area of untouched forest perfect for any lovers of nature!
