Making Your Preparations For Volunteering Abroad
When you embark on an adventure as a volunteer in Africa you have to expect change in your life. This will be a new chapter in your life and you will no doubt begin to meet lots of new friends abroad. You many also find yourself changing your whole view on the world. It’s very common for people to volunteer abroad and then change their beliefs about certain things and well as feeling different about themselves and having a different attitude towards other people. These changes will be very visible to your friends and family but they may not understand why these changes haves occurred.
It is not uncommon when you are participating in volunteer work that you will face challenges. The most important thing is that you learn how to handle these issues and you realise that there are people to help you through the difficult times as well. It is important to tell the people around you how you feel as you never know they may be feeling the same thing. It is a good idea to set realistic expectations when you are abroad as not everything always goes as well as planned.
Money often plays a huge role in where and for how long you volunteer in Uganda or wherever it is in Africa you wish to volunteer. You are going to be a long way from home for a period of time so it is a good idea that you plan your finances back at home before you travel. You need to make sure you have your regular home bills covered including rent, water/electricity/gas and any phone & internet bills you have. Without accounting for the essentials your trip will be in disarray.
Although obvious it’s a good idea to do a bit of research into the country you are travelling to and locate it on the map so you can see where you will be heading in relation to your home. It’s a good idea to take into account the season you will be travelling abroad whether it’s likely to be the rain season or the dry season. You must also establish if there is a threat of terrorism or war when you travel there. These are scary thoughts so it is important to find out before you travel.
