Pluses and Minuses of Vacation Cruises
My family enjoys cruising. We have taken six cruises in the past four years, and even though we most definitely enjoy the experience of being on a cruise, there are still some things we haven’t particularly liked about our cruises. According to my family, there are major pluses and minuses associated with taking a cruise. We’ll start with the minuses so we can end on a positive note.
MINUSES
Staying in touch. Perhaps the biggest disadvantage for the girls is the extravagant expense of staying in touch with friends back home. It never seems to matter to the girls that they should be out making new friends because they still have to contact the old ones. All the cruises we have taken have offered Internet Service (around $24 for 60 minutes and half of that for half the time). Phone service is available in the middle of the ocean, but be prepared for the hefty fee.
Small cabins and even smaller restrooms. Unless you’re paying for a suite, then the size of your accommodations isn’t going to please you. Don’t try and change your mind in the restroom; it’s way too small. One step out of the shower (only suites have tubs), and you’re practically in the sink.
PLUSES
Great value. With the exception of some beverages, spa services, shops, excursions, and the casino, on most cruises, the price for everything comes with your room. This includes all the great shipboard entertainment such as Broadway style productions, comedy acts, contests, and clubs designed just for the children. You can’t beat a deal like that one, even at peak cruise season.
Food and more food. You begin eating onboard before you even go to your room for the first time, and your food choices are unlimited. There are both casual and formal dining rooms. On most ships, you can also find a sushi stand, a deli, and a 24 hour pizzeria and ice cream dispenser. If that’s not enough, complimentary room service is available 24 hours a day.
Good or bad, hopefully the items mentioned above will help you decide if cruising is for you. With us, the positives greatly outweigh the negatives. Of course, cruising is not for everyone, but you can never speak for yourself until you have actually experienced it. Try it; you might love it just as much as we do.
