The Tent Camping Advantage Over an RV

A few weeks ago I had the occasion for a one day camping trip at a nearby lake here in Montana. It was not a long weekend and we had not planned on going, but the weather was nice so we grabbed our tent and camping gear and went. Once we arrived and got set up, we were preparing to go down by the lake to see if we could catch a few salmon for dinner. At about that time, another camping unit arrived at the campground. These folks had a heavy duty Dodge pickup that was pulling a fifth wheel camper behind that was just about as big as the house we live in. Anyway, being a Good Samaritan and all, I could see the driver of this rig was having quite a bit of difficulty getting where he wanted to be, so I strolled over to give him a hand. His main problem was getting his camper backed into a spot that was large enough for him, so I stood behind and helped guide him in.

After approximately a half an hour of this he was safely backed into his spot so my girl and I waved our good-byes and headed on down to the lake. After fishing for an hour or two we returned to camp with enough fish for a very good meal. It was then that we noticed the family that we had helped back in was still having trouble. The gentleman was still attempting to get the camper level while his partner was inside the camper, occasionally yelling out the window to see if he was about done so he could come in and set up the satellite before her favorite show came on. Also I noticed a boy and girl that were sitting in lawn chairs near their camp that could not put their cell phones down long enough to give him a hand.

For the most part this type of situation is common in camping areas, but I find it a bit confusing. The reason I enjoy camping is it gets me away from the city, allows me to deal with simple things, and simply enjoy being with my spouse without all of the hustle-bustle that comes with everyday life. Perhaps, this is not everybody’s goal in camping and I find nothing wrong with people doing as they wish, but instead of envying these people I am quite happy with the advantages I have as a tent camper.

Some people do not see the advantages that I am very fond of, but to me they are simple to see.

1. The affordability – I did not have to take out a second mortgage to go camping and my upkeep is pretty simple, not to mention, although I have a pickup, my camping equipment could fit in a car if I were inclined to do so.

2. The ease of set up – Nowadays, tents are so easy to put up, it takes me less than a half an hour to be totally set up.

3. Less problems finding a spot – the weekend I spoke of was a bit unusual for me because my camping spots tend to be away from the beaten path. Most of them are in place large campers could never fit.

4. Tent camping allows you to love the outdoors – Not that campers do not, but if I wanted to watch TV and text with my friends I would have stayed home.

These are only a few things I see as advantages for tent camping but I am fairly sure there are others. But for those that have tents and envies the large campers, perhaps we need to take stock of what we have and be thankful. Although the RV campers can be a home away from home and are usually really nicely furnished. Basic camping have never been defined by have all the conveniences of home.
