Create a Fire Easily Out Of Two Sticks Of Wood
In this article I’ll be describing the basic process, which amount to four steps, and allow you to create a fire quite easily out of two sticks of wood.
Whether you’re going camping in the woods with your friends and family, or wishing to start a bonfire, there are fewer life skills which are more important and more useful then being able to start a fire out of two sticks of wood.
The first thing you’ll need to do is to find two sticks, with one preferably being hardwood, and the other softwood, making sure that both sticks are dead and as dry as much as possible. The sticks need to be of a certain size, with the softwood being about 1 foot in length, 1 inch thick and at least 2 inches across, and the hardwood stick needs to be around 1 inch round. This is to make sure that it’s easy enough for you to grip. The hardwood stick should also be shaped to a point.
The next step we’ll need to do is to cut a groove in the centre and down the length of the softwood piece of stick. After doing this, turn the stick over, and repeat the same step on the other side. If you have a knife, perfect, if not, find a stone, preferably a rough stone like sandstone, and rub it up and down the piece of softwood with a firm pressure.
Next, we’ll need to dig a small hole to keep the piece of softwood in place. Kneel before the softwood stick, with it directly in front of your knees. Hold the piece of hardwood stick with both of your hands, and quickly, yet with force, rub it up and down the length of the groove. Do this continuously, as after a while it will create heat, and cause a hot ember, which is in the form of a hole, which appears in the centre of the wood.
Lastly, you’ll need to apply this ember from the softwood to a tinder. This can be any dry, flammable material, so strips of bark for example. Blow on this to provide it with extra oxygen, and when the flame starts, place the tinder into the base of the camp-fire, aiming for the smaller, more easily ignitable sticks.
