Surfing in Cornwall

The North Coast of Cornwall is one of the best places in Europe for surfing. Here is a guide for surfing in Cornwall whether you are experienced or just beginning.

Known as the Home of British Surfing and home of the British Surfing Association, Newquay offers some of the best surfing because there are beaches good for all types of surfers. The best and most famous surfing beach is Fistral.

These fun, barreling waves are frequented by locals and pros, but the wave is good for all skill levels. Summer crowds flock to the 3 sandy beaches of Newquay Bay, where the waves can be good for beginners and surf schools, but too crowded to surf seriously. Whipsaderry is another good, although less crowded, beach break. Crantock is a fickle river mouth break that can be good, with "Kiddie’s Corner" beach break that is good for beginners.

North of Newquay is the town of Bude, which is surrounded by decent surf breaks like Duck pool, Northcott Mouth, Summerleaze, and Uptown. The best beach break around Bude is Sandy Mouth, just north of town. Crowds won’t be as bad here as they are in Newquay. On the way from Newquay to Bude, you can find uncrowded waves at hollow, barreling reef breaks like Rusties and Riglie’s Right or the more mellow beaches or Polzeth.

West Cornwall also offers up some solid surf, no matter the swell direction. Godrevy Reef is a proper big-wave spot the breaks hollow over rock. There is a left and right hand wave. This spot is not suitable for beginners. Perranuthnoe is a fun beach break offering both left and right-handers. This spot is also not crowded and good for intermediate and advanced surfers. West Cornwall also has a few point breaks like Newlyn Harbour, Penhale Corner, and St. Ives Harbour which work well on certain swell directions but can have strong rips and hazards like rocks.

South Cornwall offers fewer beaches and some really good reefs, points, and river mouths. Gribbin head is a hollow left point break that breaks over sand and rock, making it a super fun spot other than the currents and difficult access. Mandsands is a thick, hollow reef break that picks up Atlantic and channel swells. The rides are short but memorable. Bantham can be a fun but fickle river mouth break that is well suited for long boarding.
